ShareScientists are discovering that the air we breathe carries tiny traces of DNA and RNA from the living world around us. These genetic fragments come from skin cells, hair, breath, microbes, pollen, and even animals, and can stay suspended in the air for days. Early studies have shown that researchers can detect zoo animals such as tigers by sampling the air around them, and a UK wide survey identified more than 1,100 organisms using air monitoring stations. Experts believe airborne DNA could help track wildlife, spot invasive species, and even detect disease causing microbes earlier. The techniques may also help monitor airborne pathogens, identify disease outbreaks earlier, and improve understanding of how microbes spread indoors and outdoors. Long-term archived air filters may even allow scientists to reconstruct past changes in viruses, bacteria, and other organisms. But questions remain about how far DNA can travel. There are also privacy concerns, because unintentionally collected human DNA could reveal sensitive genetic information or identify individuals.
